Non-Restricted Firearms Licensing
If you want to use non-restricted firearms when hunting, then you need to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence. In order to do so, you must first take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course in Edmonton and then pass the firearms safety test.
The content of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course is approved by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Canadian Firearms Program in order to ensure that it meets the requirements laid out in the Firearms Act. The course was developed in the interest of promoting firearms safety across all of Canada’s provinces and territories.
While taking your firearms course in Edmonton, you will learn about the major types of firearms and ammunition, basic safety practices, and how to properly operate a firearm. The course will also cover topics such as safe handling and carrying, safe storage, and how to care for and maintain non-restricted firearms.
Non-restricted firearms include some air guns, shotguns equal to or longer than 660mm, standard hunting rifles, sporting rifles that have a barrel equal to or longer than 470mm.
Restricted Firearms Licensing
If you wish to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence for restricted firearms, then you must take the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course after you have passed the Canadian Non-Restricted Firearms Safety Course in Edmonton, and pass all of the necessary tests for licensing. The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course offers much of the same instruction and information as the non-restricted course, albeit in regards to restricted firearms instead.
Note: you CANNOT hunt with restricted firearms in Canada.
Alberta Hunting Regulations
On top of taking a firearms course in Edmonton and holding a valid PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence) for the firearms you want to use when hunting, you must also have successful completed the Alberta Conservation and Hunter education course. Passing this course then allows you to acquire a WIN Card that then permits you to purchase Hunting Licences and Hunting Tags.
The Alberta Conservation and Hunter education course is designed to ensure that you stay safe and follow all hunting regulations. You will earn topics covering first aid, survival, hunting ethics, bow hunting techniques, wildlife identification, and wildlife management to name a few.
